My Thoughts

This book, y'all! It made me snort laugh -- out loud -- more times than I could count. Jessica Kate's Aussie wit and sass comes roaring out in her debut novel, and I, for one, hope for a sequel.

I could never fit this story into a box, which I absolutely loved! There's no neat and tidy character cast here -- no Hallmark movie cookie cutters. The characters' relationships are intricate and interlaced and overlapping, just like the complexity of real life. I never fully knew what certain characters were going to do, and so when Natalie and Jeremy and Lilli were surprised, I was surprised; when they hurt, I understood, and when they cheered, I smiled. That to me is a mark of a skilled novelist!

And y'all... this book has a baby in it! *cue the heart eye emojis* I'm probably partial to 10-month-old Oliver because he's so close to my own baby's age, but Nat and Jem's interactions with baby Olly in this book were comedy gold. And come on, what's not to love about an adorably overwhelmed single dad who's doing his best to take care of a baby whose mother walked out on him? I mean...

Natalie and Jem's relationship was great -- the tension, the sparks, the cute factor, and the unique challenges brought by being each other's ex. Jem's relationship with his dad was so well done, too.

And Lilli -- goodness, I probably pulled for her the most. Her struggles were raw and gripping. The scene involving lipstick, office walls, and tears was brilliant in its emotion. Her story was left with a lot of loose ends, so I'm really hoping for a sequel that picks up where Love and Other Mistakes leaves off.

I was pleasantly surprised by the spiritual aspect of the story -- it started out fairly light and then ended up giving a whammy of a lesson that I personally needed to hear. At the end of the day, it was more than just a fun comedy.
